The organization in Norway draws on ExxonMobil’s technology, research efforts and experience gained worldwide. To deal with future energy challenges, new energy efficient technology and innovative processes need to be developed.

ExxonMobil employs more than 14,000 scientists and engineers, over 1,000 of them with Ph.D.s. Over the last five years, ExxonMobil Corporation has invested 3,7 billion dollars in research and development, which has yielded good results.

Our research has given the company a competitive edge in business areas like exploration and production, project development, and in the refining and chemicals industry. Here are some examples:

  • Advances in seismic imaging and use of EM’s new high-performance computing system is enabling the development of leading-edge technology for physical imaging
  • New methods of satellite-image analysis has made it easier to map hydrocarbon reservoirs
  • In the downstream, new catalyst technology has created better processes and products in the refining, chemicals and lube oil businesses.
  • A lithium-ion battery breakthrough that greatly improves the safety, power and reliability of larger batteries for hybrid vehicles, thereby helping promote their use to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions
