Company and business divisions

ExxonMobil in Norway includes several companies including Esso Norge AS, all affiliates of Exxon Mobil Corporation in the USA. Here we use the term ExxonMobil when referring to the companies’ activities in Norway. ExxonMobil is Norway’s oldest energy company, established in 1893. The company’s headquarters are located at Slagen in Tønsberg. The refinery at Slagentangen started in 1961 and has a processing capacity of 6 million tons of crude oil per year.

For several years ExxonMobil has been one of the largest non-Norwegian oil and gas producers on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. In 2017 the company sold its ownership interests in the ExxonMobil operated fields Balder, Jotun Ringhorne and Ringhorne East to Point Resources. In December 2019, remaining upstream assets were sold to Vår Energi AS.

In 2017 the company sold its retail stations business to the Irish company DCC plc., who operates the business through its Norwegian subsidiary Certas Energy Norway AS. In line with long term agreements for the use of the Esso brand and the supplies of fuels from ExxonMobil the approximately 250 petrol stations continue to be Esso branded stations, and the company continues to market both Esso and Mobil branded products.

We are committed to meeting the growing demand for energy, while at the same time reducing the environmental impacts. We believe that climate change risks warrant action and it’s going to take all of us — business, governments and consumers — to make meaningful progress. We are therefore targeted to reduce emissions from both the manufacture and use of our products. The ExxonMobil group also uses extensive resources on research in new energy and energy efficiency, especially in the field of carbon capture and advanced biofuels.
